Go-To-Market Strategies today announced the release of its Sales and Marketing Industry Study. This report outlines the results from their December 2010 survey of sales and marketing professionals and business owners.

Over 1,000 Go-To-Market Strategies subscribers responded to questions regarding their compensation, sales and marketing planning, sales quotas, and more.

“This study allows sales and marketing professionals to benchmark themselves against their peers in terms of pay, budgets, and job satisfaction to name a few,” stated company founder and president Shannon Kavanaugh. “Some very interesting trends have emerged.”

Key findings from the survey include:


    68% of companies spend less than 5% of revenue on marketing, with the strongest range being 3-5% of revenue (33%). Still, 24% of marketers spend 6-10%, while 14% spend 11-20% or more.

    Surprisingly, 40% of sales people reported they DO NOT make commission and only 3% of plans are commission only, a 10% drop from the last study. These shifts in how commissions are being used are likely due to the current economic climate.
