MyMuseum Launches on Android, Putting Art History in the Palm of your Hand
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 21, 2011
ArtHistories.com celebrated the launch of the MyMuseum app, in its play to become the leading provider of audio tours for art museums and galleries across the country.
Initially released to the Android marketplace, the app provides over two hours of content on the major artists of the western cannon, with information on their background, artistic influences, style, and personal history. The company plans to release the iPhone version in March of this year.
“Without exception, the guides must be fascinating and accessible, especially to visitors who don’t know much about art,” says Silverzweig. “Our mission is simple, but important. We want to turn a first-time museum visitor into a life-long lover of art and art history. Artists become famous for good reasons, and not always because of their art, so we dig deep into their history and find the gems to share with our listeners and capture their attention.”
The app was conceived by Zachary Silverzweig and his fiancée Amy Ding as they waited in line for an audio guide at the Whitney in New York, during the Whitney Biennial exhibit. “The works in the exhibit were very modern, very difficult to approach on their own. We needed a guide and the Whitney was all out,” said Amy Ding, thinking back on the experience.
Audio guide services on a mobile phone are nothing new, in fact a search of “Audio Guide” generates over 250 results in the Android Marketplace alone. Mr. Silverzweig sees this as a central part of the challenge for the customer and an opportunity for ArtHistories.com.
Consistency is the key. Rather than have a user purchase and learn a new app at every museum, MyMuseum provides a central platform to deliver the tour, with a consistent user interface and consistently interesting content.
“We’re not art historians,” says Silverzweig. “We are just normal people who happened to have listened to more audio guide content in the last two years than any art consumer on the planet. We know what works. Listen to one track, you’ll be hooked.”
And it’s 99 cents. Can’t beat that.
