New SGIC Research Shows Renters Could be at a Higher Risk of Burglary than Home Owners
Adelaide, South Australia (PRWEB) April 30, 2009
In a recent survey commissioned by home insurance provider SGIC, one in three renters reported they had no significant security measures, such as deadlocks on doors and windows, alarms and sensor lights.
According to the research, 59 per cent of renters had deadlocks, compared to 71 per cent of home owners. Renters were also less likely to have a security alarm (16 per cent) compared to home owners (30 per cent).
SGIC spokesperson Tia Psaras said the findings were a concern, especially given that renters are more likely to experience a burglary**.
“SGIC’s home insurance claims data has shown renters are up to 50 per cent more likely to experience a burglary, so it’s important for renters to think about home security,” Ms Psaras said.
“Thieves tend to be opportunistic, so they’ll usually target homes with lower levels of security.
“The rental market is competitive but home security is important for peace of mind. If renters are uncomfortable with their level of home security, they could consider negotiating improvements as part of their lease agreement.”
Ms Psaras said renters could consider wireless security alarms, which are portable and easy to install.
“Many security providers, including SGIC, now supply wireless alarms, which are reasonably priced and easy to install and uninstall – meaning renters can take the alarm with them,” she said.
Ms Psaras said despite renters’ increased risk of theft, almost 50 per cent had no home contents insurance for their belongings.
“Often renters don’t appreciate the value of everything they own, particularly clothing and expensive electronic equipment like laptops, cameras and audio equipment,” she said.
Ms Psaras said SGIC recognised the need to make it easier for renters to protect their valuables and recently introduced features to help.
“We’ve made it easier for renters to take out individual renters’ insurance policies if required,” she said.
