Post Office Car Insurance Research Reveals over a Quarter of Drivers Have Delayed their Car Service

New research from Post Office Car Insurance has found that, although car owners are advised to have their vehicle serviced once a year, 29 per cent of drivers have delayed their regular service to save money. Drivers under 30 proved most likely to delay this car maintenance.

Post Office Car Insurance warns that by failing to carry out essential car maintenance, millions of UK drivers could be putting their safety at risk.

Furthermore, the Post Office Car Insurance research has found that one in five car owners will either attempt to fix a problem themselves, ask a friend or ignore it altogether. The Post Office Car Insurance research also revealed that women are more likely to get a friend or family member to fix their car problems for them.

In the long term, persistently ignoring car problems or attempting DIY repairs to save money may mean owners risk their car insurance being deemed invalid if the vehicle is considered un-roadworthy.

Post Office Head of Car Insurance, Richard Pennant-Jones, said:

“While the recession is causing us all to watch our budgets, car safety is one area where cutting corners could cost more than you bargained for. Failing to maintain your car could even result in it being deemed un-roadworthy and therefore invalidate your car insurance.”
