Post Office top-selling foreign currency list shows euro reigns supreme

London, London (PRWeb UK) October 17, 2009

The Post Office top-selling foreign currency ranking has revealed that the euro remains far and away the most popular foreign currency for UK holidaymakers, accounting for 75 per cent of foreign currency exchange.

As predictions for a ‘barbecue Britain’ summer turned out to be false, it seems that holidaymakers decided not to swap vacations in Europe for stays at home.

According to the recent Post Office Foreign Currency research, the best-selling European foreign currency, apart from the euro, was the Turkish lira. Foreign currency sales for the Turkish lira came third on the Post Office list of top travel money, behind only the euro and US dollar.

While the euro is top of the Post Office foreign currency sales list, the others in the top five types of foreign currency on the list – the US dollar, Turkish lira, and Australian and Canadian dollars – have all had significant foreign exchange sales increases compared to 2008.

The improvement of foreign currency sales has been helped by better foreign exchange rates. Holidaymakers are finding their travel money is being stretched further and that foreign currency exchange gets them more ‘bang for their buck’.

Sarah Munro, Post Office Head of Travel Services, said: ‘Foreign currency sales have revealed that, despite previous concerns, UK holidaymakers still opted for Mediterranean and European destinations this summer. As foreign exchange rates have improved this has also helped boost foreign currency sales, allowing holidaymakers to make the most of their travel money while abroad. UK travellers can also save themselves unnecessary hassles or additional cost by buying foreign currency in advance and not at an overseas ATM.’
